The Metropolitan Museum of Art, often referred to as The Met, is one of the most renowned art museums in the world. Located in New York City, it is situated along Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park. The Met houses an extensive collection spanning over 5,000 years of art from ancient civilizations, medieval Europe, Renaissance art, American art, Asian art, African art, Islamic art, and contemporary art.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is presenting a groundbreaking exhibition in 2023 of 40 works by Vincent van Gogh from 22nd May to 27th August 2023. The exhibition is called “Van Gogh’s Cypresses” and focuses on the unique vision the artist brought to bear on the towering trees. It is an unprecedented perspective on a motif almost synonymous with Van Gogh’s original method of expression. The exhibition features iconic pictures such as “Wheat Field with Cypresses” and “The Starry Night”.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has also hosted several exhibitions related to Vincent van Gogh in the past, including:

  • Vincent van Gogh: The Drawings Exhibition: This exhibition included a selection of more than one hundred works ingeniously composed in pen and ink, graphite, chalk, charcoal, and watercolor. 

  • Van Gogh, Mondrian, and Munch: Selections from the Department of Drawings and Prints Exhibition: This 2022 exhibition featured drawings and prints by Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, and Edvard Munch.

  • Van Gogh Irises and Roses: This 2015 exhibition reunited the Metropolitan Museum’s Irises and Roses with their counterparts: the upright Irises from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, and the horizontal Roses from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Starry Night, 1889 

The most famous Van Gogh artwork on display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and indeed in the United States, is arguable Starry Night, 1889, (please note Starry Night is on loan to The Met during the summer 2023) which features a night sky filled with swirling stars and a glowing crescent moon. In addition to this painting, the collection includes:

  • “Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background, 1889”: Vibrant brushstrokes depict the beauty of olive trees against a mountain backdrop, showcasing Van Gogh’s love for nature’s colors.
